So sorry I haven't been around lately! Having guests for a month took up a lot of my spare time and while I enjoyed having them here, I wasn't able to keep up with other things like this blog or my laundry. We had a really nice time and they left a couple of days ago.

Remember my Fashion Alert from 10/16 about the RedEnvelope necklace? Well, my order came today. Only three days after I placed it! First off, who would've thunk it? Jeffrey winning Project Runway?? *head explodes* On another note, I loved Uli's line. It was so fresh and full of life. She made a terrific music choice as well. It reminded me of music from the Sims 2, which is completely fun.

Second, how adorable are these Corelle dishes? If I needed dishes I'd definitely consider these as a practical solution to my tendency to fling dishes down the stairs.

I found a pair of Cole Haans tonight at TJ Maxx for only $50 - similar pairs are listed on Amazon.com right now for $157, down from $175. They're perfect for work because they have soft soles, which my coworkers prefer on our wood floors throughout the office.

They've got Nike Air technology in the heels so they're incredibly comfortable. I joked that I could run a mile in them and I actually probably could. I plan to wear the heck out of them with neutral outfits using jeans and dress pants.

I'm going to be on a shoe high for the next week.

So last week I fell down the stairs. Well, more like slipped going down our finished wood stairs in my socks in the dark holding dishes. Very smart. I landed on the edge of a stair on my spine, which landed me at the doctor's office the next day for assurances that I wasn't broken.

Anyway, I think I caught a cold from spending an hour in that waiting room with 10 other people who could have had the ebola virus for all I know. I'm super squishy in all kinds of ways today so I think I'm going to take a fashion blog sick day and go tuck myself in for a nap.

Just wanted to take a minute to recommend one of my current favorite products:

This isn't cheap but it's one of those things for which I'm willing to pay full price: Clinique Moisture Surge Extra Refreshing Eye Gel 0.5 oz, $26.

It lifts and separates! Not really, but it does reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles and dark, puffy under eye circles. It leaves your skin feeling refreshed and moisturized. If you know of a product even better than this one, give me a hollar! However, this is the best under eye circle-reducing cream I've found so far. I've been using it for about a year. It's oil-free. It comes in a small tube but you don't need much; one .5 oz. tube lasts me 5-6 months.

Clinique All About Eyes 0.5 oz /15 ML, $19.99, is another terrific product that does the same thing, minus the cooling sensation that the gel leaves. I used All About Eyes for about a year and a half before switching to the Moisture Surge Gel because of the cooling feeling and the packaging that allows me to use less cream at one time. I wouldn't be surprised if these products also help prevent wrinkles since they keep delicate under eye skin hydrated.

In case you can't tell, I am a fairly low-key dresser. While I love colors, I don't do anything too flashy or super trendy. Hence last night's purchases:

American Eagle Trail Blazer (may have to try link twice to see it), Color: Grey Cove, Was $59.50, Now $29.95.
I bought this because there have been so many times when I've needed a casual, very light jacket but had nothing. This fits nicely and brings out my eyes. I'll wear it with jeans and khaki-colored pants, maybe also a jean skirt and leggings if I find any I like. It makes me feel a bit like I'm in the army.

I bought this because my old LS (long-sleeved) tee from Old Navy has super stretched out. Layering with LS tees in the winter 1) gives you more options for outfits, and 2) allows you to make greater use of your wardrobe.

Here's my frivolous purchase from Payless for only $3. My husband laughed when he saw it because, while it's cute, it's not me. However, I continue to tell myself that I am funky enough to wear it.

I currently have this tote in a brown suede canvas that I received from my mom as a gift for getting my first job after college. I've used it for work as well as for travel and have received many compliments on it.

Its one drawback, in my opinion, is that the handles are not padded. When it's heavily loaded the straps dig into your shoulder a bit. You could remedy that, however, with a small luggage shoulder pad.

I love this tote. Grab it while you can...heck, get several to give as Christmas gifts!

Haircut!

I got my hair cut yesterday at the local high school's cosmetology dept. I mentioned this in an earlier post as being a great option for frugal spenders. I paid $16 before tip for a full head of foils, shampoo, cut, and dry.

As long as you don't mind being a subject on which these students practice and learn, it's a terrific way to save about $100 on foils and cuts. The instructor also supervises everything and corrects mistakes so it's not as risky an undertaking as it might sound.

In order to take advantage of this opportunity you must be available during school hours. Outside of tax season my office closes at noon on Fridays so it's a good day for me to get my hair done.

These are pics from yesterday. It was my first time styling the new cut. Today I've dried it chunkier and straighter, which I prefer.

You can see the red streaks better here. They're funky without being unprofessional for the office.

There two things I'd like to address in this entry, both of which are related to Target.

First things first. I told you I love ballet flats! I found these hot little leopard print flats at Target today. They are originally $14.99 but are on sale for $10 until Saturday. If you're craving these as much as I did, get yourself to Target right away because there were very few pairs left. I was lucky enough to get the last pair in my size. Did I mention that they're comfortable too?

Not only do I love this flat, but I own two pairs just like it and only paid half of what it's listed for here ($50)! Check your local Gap for flats like this in brown, black, and green. They should be $25 or less.

Fashionably Frugal Hair Maintenance

Here's a hair tip that I wanted to pass on:

If you are like me and pretty easy-going when it comes to your hair, see if your local high school has a cosmetology department and consider going there for your haircuts and coloring. Just call the front office or the cosmetology dept. line and set up an appointment during their school hours.

I did this and was able to get a full head of foils in two colors, a shampoo, cut, and dry for only $15 total before tip! That is unbelieveable, especially since they did a terrific job. It looked as good as anything I've ever had. At that price I can actually afford to regularly get the works. Sweet!

I'll try to remember to take a picture next time I go. The one draw-back is that they're only available during school hours. However, it's worth it to me (and my boss is okay with this) to take a couple hours of off work to get my hair done and then stay late the next day to make up the hours.

This is so true. I bought a dress for a wedding several months ago for something like $40, down from $70 I think? I spent $15, half of what I saved by buying it on sale, to get it hemmed since I'm not tall, and taken in since I was between sizes. It was so worth it. The dress fit noticeably better, made me feel great, and was eye-catching in my opinion. :) Another great thing about this is that it's ready for future events now! All I have to do is add jewelry and I'm ready to go.

This black Burberry Quilted Jacket is a wonderfully classic look for any wardrobe, one that could be worn by women of all ages over several seasons. $375.

I found a terrific alternative to this jacket at Walmart! While some of the pieces are a bit pricier than they should be in my opinion, I'm really liking the George line. It has a lot to offer the fashionably frugal shopper. This George - Women's Quilted Coat was available in four colors, all of which I liked, and seems quite comfortable and nicely made for $29.76.

Here is mine, which I bought yesterday. The shape of it on the body is flattering and I can't wait to wear it with my straight leg jeans and black heeled boots once it's a bit cooler outside. This coat could also be worn with skinny jeans tucked into a pair of sassy black boots - it's up to you. I just haven't worked up the courage to graduate to skinny jeans yet. *blush*

- Perfect for unruly flyaways:
All Ways Natural Castor Oil Conditioning Hair Dress. Celebrity stylist Peter Butler uses this on Sheryl Crow. Olay Regenerist Daily Regenerating Serum. I tried a free sample of this three months ago and noticed results immediately. After I use it, my skin is softer, more even-looking, and old scarring and spots are faded. The bottle says to use it once or twice daily but I find that to be too much for my sensitive skin. I use it once or twice every couple of weeks. A little goes a long way, and the texture and smell are wonderful.

I decided to fork over the money for a small bottle of this serum back in early July (and actually paid more in the store than it's listed for here on Amazon). It still looks completely full. According to the reviews I've read on Amazon.com and Epinions.com, most people who try this agree that it really works. $16.57.

- This is for those of you who wear soft contacts like I do.
You should always carry a small bottle of rewetting drops in your purse for those unexpected specks of dust or contact pop-outs. Rewetting drops should not be used for maintaining your contacts on a daily basis, but rather only to lend moisture to your eyes in place of or in addition to your natural tears. All you really need, in my opinion, is a .1 FL OZ bottle of rewetting drops. Unless you have very dry eyes it should last you until the expiration date.

Now, my tip to you follows from what my eye doctor told me at my most recent contacts eye exam. He said that the other rewetting drops out there don't lubricate your eyes very well and that I should only be using Systane Lubricant Eye Drops. I trust him on this because he is not normally one to show preference over one product or another unless there are differences in quality. Thus, when he strongly recommends something I listen.

He gave me a sample bottle and I could really tell a difference -- these are much richer and more lubricating than the normal Alcon or Renu rewetting drops that I'm used to. Therefore, I pass this information on to you in hopes that it will enrich your life in the small way that it has mine. As soon as I saw this item on People.com this morning, I had to share it with you. It's not exactly budget-friendly but I think many of you iPod lovers can appreciate it. It's called the TuneBuckle. It's a belt buckle that holds and protects your iPod Nano for you while you go about your normal day listening to your music. Now, I am not an iPod person and know very little about them but I can certainly see the appeal in this product. I also find it moderately attractive for such a functional item.

The belt comes in two colors, black and white, and is offered in a variety of sizes. There are three types of buckles available: The Original ($60), shown below, which offers a view of the iPod inside, The Full Moon ($70) where only the iPod's volume dial is visible, and The Full Metal Jacket ($80), which completely encases the iPod inside the metal buckle. Not fashionable but definitely frugal

In an effort to be more environmentally friendly and get a little exercise while I'm at it, I went looking for an inexpensive bicycle today. I thought I'd use it for getting around town to avoid using gas for local trips. Because I didn't plan to use it for anything serious I felt that a used bike would be okay. My budget was $30.00.

I started out at 4:45 and visited:

-Local YMCA Thrift Shop - No bikes but saw some cool jewelry.
-Yard sale that I spotted driving down the street - Two bikes for less than $10. Score! Unfortunately they were about 30 years old, dirty, and rusting.
-Big Lots - 2 boys' bikes for $50, nothing else.
-Local sporting goods store - No bikes.
-Kmart - Cheapest adult bike I saw was $70. Boo.
-Walmart - Cheapest adult bike was $70ish. I seriously considered getting one of the boys' bikes for $40 but it was clearly designed for a young boy and I felt it wasn't worth going over budget for all of the strange looks I'd get.
-Local outdoor store - No bikes.
-Local bike store - Closed.

I was home by 6:45.

How disappointing. I'll hit the local bike store that was closed on Monday after work but I'm still trying to think of other places where I could get a refurbished or seriously discounted bike. I may visit more yard sales if I see signs for them but I'm honestly not the best yard sale shopper unless the items are like new.

-- Here's a step-by-step guide from marie claire for giving yourself The Perfect Pedicure. Walmart and similar stores frequently offer a variety of inexpensive manicure and pedicure kits. Doing your own nails is a great way to stretch your budget without feeling too deprived. :)

-- When buying pointy-toed shoes or high heels, your feet may be more comfortable if you go up a half or full size. When buying running shoes, leave a little bit of space above your toes to allow for slippage. Also be sure that the arch of your foot is adequately supported.

-- While it's okay to save money on shoes that you don't wear for long periods of time or don't use for heavy activity, don't skimp on exercise shoes. Supportive shoes made from quality materials are one of the most important pieces of sports equipment you will use. It is definitely worth the money and your body's health and comfort to pay for a good shoe that fits you well. You don't need to buy the most expensive shoe but I'd stick with name brands you've heard of.

*Edited: Someone asked me a really good question about how to handle visible bra straps. I did some reading and it looks like the generally accepted answer is to wear a strapless bra if you're planning to wear your cami alone. Invest in a good one, it's definitely worth it. New Gap ballet flats. Love them!

I bought two pairs. I don't normally do that, especially with shoes over $20, but they are so versatile that I couldn't turn them down. Plus, they're comfortable. That's worth a few extra bucks.

Black flats = $22.49 because I bought them on the first Tuesday of the month, which is a 10% discount day for Gap card holders.

Brown flats = $24.99 at full price when I went back for them 2 days later.

People.com often publishes a Hot Find item of the day. The hot find is a trendy, expensive item that has been reduced in price and is thus more available to the masses. This is great, except usually the price reductions still aren't enough for me. Thus, my goal is to find an even less expensive version of this hot item so that we poor people can still look great.

I like these shoes. I probably wouldn't wear them because a) I'd trip and break my legs and b) they're not really my style. But they're attractive, functional, and the open toe is a little sexy.

The Gap also has an adorable wedge version of this shoe in its stores right now. They're surprisingly comfortable. But then again, aren't most of Gap's shoes? I think these heeled wedges were around $30-$35 and they came in black, brown, and perhaps one other color like silver?

*Correction 8/8: They're $24.99 and the third color is an olive green, not silver.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! After a few hours of discussion with peers and very limited research, I've decided to give this "style on a budget" blog a try.

Purpose: The purpose of this blog is simple - to help people look good without spending a lot.

It's true that there are 239480751 other sources on this out there but I've found that many of them offer suggestions that are either a) still out of my price range or b) ugly. I can't guarantee that you won't think some of my recommendations are ugly but at least I'll like them. :)

The Look: I'm not an extremely trendy nightclubber so you might want to move on if that's what you're looking for. I tend to build my wardrobe around basic pieces that can be used in multiple outfits over several seasons.

The Plan: 1) Try to replicate stylish, expensive outfits in a way that is reasonably affordable and accessible to the average person. 2) Post trendy items with high price tags and show you where to find similar items for less. 3) Give tips for assembling outfits. 4) Try to cover some inexpensive looks for special events. 5) List any bargain or hot items that I see in my weekly forays around town and on the internet. 6) Perhaps throw in a few other random budget-wise suggestions for other aspects of life (interior decorating, exercise, grocery shopping, whatever). 7) Probably also shoot from the hip and see where it goes.

For now, I'm going to focus on women's fashion. I may add men's fashion tips later. I may also decide to offer my services to anyone who needs or wants a personal shopper whether it be locally or long-distance. If this thing actually works out, I might set up a mailing list and send out an e-newsletter as well.

About Me: I am a 24 year-old female with a low budget but moderately expensive taste. I don't claim to be awesome or even excellent at being fashionable but I'm somewhat picky and good at shopping on a budget. I thought my tips might be helpful to others who know what they want but don't know how to get it without breaking the bank.

I'm going to do this in a way that is similar to a popular celebrity gossip site I frequent and just keep a running blog of my recommendations.

I definitely want feedback on this. Please contact me if you have any input at all, whether it be good, bad, or bizarre. I want all of it and am always open to suggestions.
